The Barney Guild was formed in 2008 to bring businesses and retailers in Barnard Castle ("Barney" to locals) together to develop and promote the unique assets that we have as individuals. Unlike many other Markets towns in the country Barnard Castle is still fairly free from the cloned look of most towns with a large number of the shops being truly independant. We are not without the normal high street coffee shops and chemists but they are in the minority, we can still boast of tearooms which serve home-made cakes baked on the premises, butchers who can trace the source of their products and art galleries which are run by the artists themselves.

Currently (Nov 2010) and unlike many other towns, Barnard Castle's High street is almost full of such shops with a very small number of empty premises. This means that if you do visit there is plenty of browsing to be done!

What we do.

The Guild is mostly self-funding and throughout the year we organise events and occasions to make the shopping experience in Barnard Castle more enjoyable and unique. From summer hanging baskets to the festive Christmas trees the guild brings businesses together to enhance ambience of the town.

Members of the guild are often asked participate on local grouops and committees to put forward the voice of the businesses in the town.
